To get back to wine, biodynamic wine is grown with many more considerations in mind than profit and taste. The production of the wine starts with attention to the soil and a biodynamic farmer views the vineyard or farm as a collective. No synthetic intervention methods are used; only the employment of natural materials and composts to grow grapes that have not been interfered with by anything that is not found on the vineyard. That’s what makes biodynamic wine different from organic wine. At an organic vineyard, you may see imported organic fertilisers and pesticides. A biodynamic vineyard will usually depend solely on the local land alone, generally through the integration of other crops and animals too.

In 1997, Moe Momtazi purchased a 532-acre abandoned wheat farm in what would eventually become the McMinnville American Viticultural Area, or AVA. Using the same holistic farming practices learned from his Persian grandfather, Momtazi transformed the property into Maysara Winery and Momtazi Vineyard. .. Knowing the rules and regulations of organic farming didn’t reflect his soul, he embraced biodynamic farming practices, achieving a Demeter biodynamic vineyard certification in 2005. The winery was certified two years later.

Biodynamic wine mainly differs from organic in that the practice takes nature into account. According to Barbara Gross, co-owner of Cooper Mountain Vineyards, the first certified biodynamic vineyard in the Pacific Northwest and one of the first top-10-certified vineyards internationally, biodynamic farming is organic and then some. Gross explains, "Organic and biodynamic farming are both approaches to agriculture that prioritize soil health and biodiversity. While both organic and biodynamic farming focus on eliminating synthetic chemicals, biodynamic farming goes one step further and incorporates practices to create a self-sustaining ecosystem on the farm."

This is partly thanks to the varied landscape of the Alps, where many different natural ecological niches sit closely together. But human influence has also played a part. For centuries, farmers have used the rocky, nutrient-poor grasslands high up in the mountains to graze their animals or mow hay for the winter. In the process, they created grasslands rich in plants and butterflies. Such traditional, unfertilised Alpine meadows host more than three times as many plant species than intensively managed, fertilised ones, according to one study.
