40 years ago, the island was a barren desert. It was only in 1979 when forestry worker Jadav "Molai" Payeng decided to improve Majuli's ecosystem that it flourished into what it is today. Payeng, 16 at the time, vowed to plant a tree on the island every single day. It has been four decades since he made the vow and the island has since been transformed into a forest reserve, thanks to his efforts.

A small percentage of organic producers will also convert to “biodynamic” farming. ... In short, biodynamic farming is organic farming plus the principles laid out by Rudolf Steiner in the 1920s. Steiner was the founder of the anthroposophy movement. He issued his guidelines for biodynamic agriculture to help farmers who complained that their soil was losing its health due to the use of artificial fertilizers. In biodynamic farming, you want to make your vines strong so that they can resist attacks from diseases. To help the vines, you use the so-called biodynamic preparation. ...

A Scottish social care charity has been marking a milestone birthday this week.
This week marks the 80th birthday of the Camphill movement. The first Camphill community was established in 1940 when the north east of Scotland offered sanctuary to a group of mainly Austrian Jewish refugees fleeing from Nazism. The founder of Camphill, Karl Konig, had made it his life’s task to create inclusive communities, where people with learning disabilities and other support needs would be treated equally, and with dignity and respect.
The first of these communities was in Milltimber, Aberdeenshire, where the Camphill Rudolf Steiner Schools were established with the help of local business people and other supporters. From here the movement has spread to more than 119 communities in 27 countries around the world, with 11 Camphill communities in Scotland.

Made with organically grown grapes (and Demeter biodynamic certified) and weighing in at a mere 11% alcohol, this is a great pick for lighter, sunnier winter days.

Vintners Jean Orens Ferraton and his son Michel have known winemaker extraordinaire Michel Chapoutier for more than two decades. In the mid-1990s, they brought organic farming to Rhone Valley vineyards when the term was still obscure. The Ferratons, whose winery was launched in 1946 by Jean, have relied on Chapoutier’s guidance to allow the land and vines to control the destiny of the grapes grown and the wines produced. Since 1998 they’ve implemented stricter biodynamic practices and eliminated all pesticides and chemical fertilizers. While they are no longer alone in setting a modern, eco-friendly course, they deserve credit for being among the early pioneers.
